The Democratic Alliance in North West wrote to the MEC for Local Government, Fenny Gaolaolwe and the Auditor-General, requesting an internal audit after the ANC in Tswaing municipality allegedly blew hundreds of thousands of rands on a “strategic planning session”.

DA councillor, Kagiso Mangwejane said the session was hosted at a luxurious lodge in the Cradle of Humankind where a motivational speaker was paid R30 000 and a facilitator was hired for another R200 000.

“Communities suffer without water and services for years now but they still see it fit to spend R236 280 on accommodation. All this expenditure took place without a council resolution. This cash-strapped municipality has been managed into the ground by the ANC. Creditors are lining up, there is no diesel for vehicles, pumps and reservoirs are dilapidated and in many areas water supply is non-existent. Living with sewage has become the norm for many residents. Yet, inconspicuous spending carries on unabated. The training session could have taken place at a much lower cost: A municipal venue could have been used at no cost, local caterers could have been sourced and academics from local universities could have performed as guest speakers,” said Mangwejane.
