DA lay charges against Madibeng over sanitation
The Democratic Alliance (DA) says it laid criminal charges against the Mayor, Justina Mothibe and Municipal Manager, Morris Maluleka for Madibeng Municipality’s role in contravening the National Water Act, the National Environment Management Act as well as the Constitution. The charges were laid at Hartbeespoort SAPS.
DA councilor in Madibeng, Erna RossouwThe said failure of the Mayor, Municipal Manager and the municipality to manage and maintain the water and sanitation systems in this municipality poses a serious health risk to the people and the environment of Madibeng as it has escalated to a point where sewage overflows into the streets.
“We asked the South Africa Police Service (SAPS) to investigate the overflow of sewage and the blocked mainlines. See photos here, here and here.
We have also reported the reluctance of the local municipality to intervene in sewage overflowing in Hartbeespoort to the Minister of Water and Sanitation.
This comes after we have lodged various complaints directly with the municipality, with no results.
In certain areas, the community cannot use their toilets, and sewage is overflowing from manholes. This is due to a blocked sewage system as a result of non-functioning pumps,” said Rossouw.
