In an effort to develop and grow stokvel clubs, associations, Makgotla, Social Clubs, Burial Societies, Small Businesses and Cooperatives, the Department of Economy and Enterprise Development will be hosting the 4th annual Stokvel Exhibition on 09 – 10 March 2018 at Ikageng Stadium, Potchefstroom, in the J.B Marks Local Municipality.
The Stokvel Exhibition is a two (2) day event that seeks to foster and formalise relationships between stokvel clubs, cooperatives, financial sector and other service providers to enhance social economic cohesion and the inclusivity of the hidden economy known as stokvels through showcasing of products and driving of conversations for possible networking and investment opportunities.
According to MEC, Mme Wendy Nelson, the Department want to instil the spirit of entrepreneurship to stokvel members so that they can explore investment opportunities that will see their clubs thriving and even leverage in this hidden economy.
“Although the concept of stokvels was initiated as a means of survival in hard times especially among disadvantaged black communities, it has evolved beyond just the realm of providing support and comfort for bereaved families. They are no longer the preserve for people desperately waiting for donations for burials and groceries but a medium for like-minded people to get together and invest money with the aim of creating wealth and security for its members”
Furthermore, the exhibition is aimed at creating ways for both formal and informal stokvel clubs to access new markets and opportunities to drive growth, investment and economic development within their areas especially in villages, Townships and Small Dorpies (VTSD).
