Executive Mayor of Madibeng Local Municipality, Jostina Mothibe celebrated her birthday by ensuring that a needy family in Kwarriekraal gets a decent shelter.
The 75-year old woman, Johanna Makamane was a recipient of a 43 square metres house built with the help of local business people through donations.
Makamane who is staying with two of her orphaned grandchildren, previously stayed in a mud house which had to be completely demolished as part of it collapsed.
She subsequently had to erect a shack with the assistance of relatives and the community.
Her plight was brought to the attention of the Office of the Executive Mayor, which responded positively and mobilised local business people within the municipality to donate material and build the house.
Speaking at the event, Executive Mayor said that: Looking at the plight of this elderly woman, we had to step in as the municipality and do something to ensure that the family gets a decent shelter. We asked for donations from the local business people and we are pleased that they responded positively. We are not ending here, we will continue with our efforts to change the lives of our people through initiatives such as these and of course we will look at the merits of cases as we receive them from our ward councillors before intervening.
An elated Makamane thanked Ward Councillor Lucky Nkoe for ensuring her plight reaches the Office of the Executive Mayor and the Executive Mayor herself for seeing to it that a decent shelter is being built for her.
She said: I want to thank the Councillor for assisting us with the huge problem that we faced staying this makeshift shelter and the Executive Mayor for ensuring that the house gets built. I am very thankful for what I see happening today in my yard.
