This winter will never be the same for scores of Tlhabane residents. They will – for the first time enjoy the warmth of their homes as legally rightful owners. North West Premier, Professor Tebogo Job Mokgoro presented their title deeds during the handing over ceremony held at the municipal offices in Tlhabane recently, confirming them as legal owners of their homes.
The handing over of title deeds is part of the efforts by the Department of Local Government and Human Settlements in partnership with North West Housing Corporation to decrease the existing title deeds backlog and confirming home ownership to customers. The houses were bought through North West Housing Corporation during the then Bophuthatswana and post 1994.
Margret Tshengiwe (82) of Unit 3 Tlhabane is one of the 139 beneficiaries who received their title deeds document. She was close to tears when Premier Mokgoro read out her name and handed a title deed to her.
“I’ve always been certain that this house belongs to me and my family but this important document reaffirms that. This will serve as a reference document to anyone who disputes my ownership of this property. We thank the provincial government and Premier Mokgoro” remarked the jubilant Tshengiwe.
Premier Mokgoro said through this title deeds roll out programme the provincial government is restoring the dignity to these home owners who are mostly the elderly people.
“Congratulations to every one of you. With these title deeds the provincial government is reaffirming you as legal home owners. This surely brings peace of mind to you and your family. You’re now certain that in case you pass away you’ll be leaving your children and grandchildren with a documented house. Keep your title deeds safe” said Premier Mokgoro to an audience of over 100 elderly people.
Premier recently handed over title deeds to home owners in Itsoseng and the roll out will continue in other areas in the province. MEC for Local government and Human Settlements, Motlalepula Rosho said the Department through Housing Corporation is doing its best to speed up the provision of title deeds.
“We are currently sitting at over 5000 title deeds backlog. Will continue to issue out title deeds as and when they are produced. All legal home owners will be confirmed in due course to have property ownership” said Rosho.
