Rustenburg shops got a nasty surprise this morning when the Department of Finance, Economy and Enterprise Development raided their premises. Surprised shopowners, employees and customers had to step aside when officials from the Department led by MEC Wendy Matsemela and other law enforcement agencies including Rustenburg Local Municipality Public Safety, SAPS, Home Affairs and Health Inspectors searched for expired goods and undocumented products. Matsemela went shop to shop in the CBD and various items were removed from the shelves. Expired goods and unmarked items were taken away while owners were slapped with fines. “We are here to protect our consumers. Tomorrow – Thursday we are celebrating World Consumer Rights Day and we must educate our people about these rights. Some of the things were found are shocking. Rotten meat – expired goods and repackaged goods are sold to our unsuspecting consumers,” said Matsemela.
