A school trip to Vereeniging started on a bad note when a school teacher dies of heart attack in front of his colleagues in Klerksdorp today – Saturday, 22 February. At around 05:30 in the morning, the school had a sport trip to Vereeniging to play rugby and hockey with other schools. It is alleged that the car of the deceased was parked at the parking lot at the school. It is also alleged that the deceased teacher as he came out of the car, he was fatally attacked by a severe heart attack and fell down.

Other teachers saw him when he fell down and rushed to help him. They called the ambulance and his family. The emergency unit arrived speedily to the scene and declared the teacher death on their arrival.

At the time of the incident all learners were inside their busses preparing to leave for their sporting trip. Apparently all learners left and did not see the incident.

The Acting Principal of the school, Jappie van Rooyen expressed his shock of the passing on of his long-time colleague and indicated that the deceased was a rugby and hockey coach.

“This incident has shocked us as the school. The deceased teacher was a head coach of rugby and hockey in our school. He has been teaching for over 40 years and was teaching a Life Orientation subject at the time of his death”, said van Rooyen.

The North West Education MEC, Mmaphefo Matsemela conveyed her heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and the entire school community.

“On behalf of the department I would like to convey our heartfelt condolences to the family and the entire school community of Klerksdorp High School. Losing one teacher is like losing the light of the society. The nation without teachers is a doomed nation. I am truly heartbroken to loose such a hardworking and dedicated teacher because last year he produced 126 distinctions in Life Orientation subject”, said MEC Matsemela.

MEC Matsemela further highlighted that on Monday, 24 February 2020, the Inclusive Education team will be sent to school to conduct counselling to the teachers, learners and the family of the deceased.

The date of the memorial service and the funeral will be communicated in due course.
