North West local artists and athlete can apply for relief fund, provided that they are able to prove that they were to make an income before the new Coronavirus regulations were made. This is according to the MEC for Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation Galebekwe Tlhapi. “We have set aside R5.5m for this fund of which R2m will be for the sports people and R3.5m going towards helping local artists financially” she said. However, Tlhapi said the payment will be a once off which should be payable starting at the end of June. “All the artists are encouraged to apply for this relief fund. We are aware that many of them are unable to work due to the new regulations and therefore their livelihood are affected.”

The announcement by the MEC comes weeks after the national department had made the call for artists to apply for this fund. “We had waited for a list from the national department to see who they have helped so that we could avoid duplication” she concluded.

Artists are encouraged to get more information from their district offices across the province.
