Mayors, chief whips and speakers of five municipalities in the North West have until Wednesday next week to vacate their offices. This is according to the IPC Coordinator of the ANC in the North West, Hlomani Chauke. He was speaking this afternoon in Rustenburg at a media briefing. Chauke says the troikas of Mahikeng, Ditsobotla, Macquassi Hills, Matlosana Local Municipalities and Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality have been been informed of the decision taken to have them removed from office, following the debilitating state of administration and dismal failure of governance in most municipalities across the ptovince.
According to Chauke the decision was taken following broad consultations with the national leadership because of the ongoing political instability in these municipalities which has led to the disruption of service delivery. “These disruptions have manifested themselves in different ways including through violent attacks on councillors, municipal employees, leaders of labour unions and even more worrisome, members of the community. This violence has resulted in some community members burning properties belonging to councillors” he said.
In relation to corruption and or mismanagement of funds in other municipalities, Chauke said the Hawks are currently investigating Bojanala Platinum District Municipality in the R134m saga.
