Investigations are underway to determine what might have caused two separate accidents that claimed 14 lives on Sunday night on N12.
According to the North West Department of Community Safety and Transport Management the first accident occurred at around 22:00 on Sunday evening when a light utility vehicle traveling towards Johannesburg direction from Potchefstroom collided with sedan going on opposite direction. Six lives were instantaneously lost. A minor whose age is still to be determined survived the crash and was taken to the hospital.
In a second accident just outside Klerksdorp at 23:35, eight people were certified dead after the taxi they were travelling in veered off its lane and faced oncoming traffic. In an apparent attempt to avoid head on collision, the taxi coming from Wolmaransstad direction went onto the embankment and hit concrete culvert.
The deceased include a child, the driver, four women and two men. The eight passengers survived the horrific accident and were taken to hospital. Information received is that the taxi was travelling from a yet to be determined location in Northern Cape to an undisclosed destination in Gauteng.
The MEC for the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, Sello Lehari sent deepest condolences to the bereaved families. He implored on motorists to be extra careful more so on this rainy weather. MEC Lehari appealed on motorists to drive according to the circumstances and conditions of the roads and time of the day rather than to the speed limit.
